Music School

For ARC 551, the brief was to design a music school on a narrow site between the Lighthouse and the Merck Building in Poole. Being a medium-sized project, the programme was quite complex, and as it was also a very specific project, therefore the technical element to it had to be correct such as for the auditorium and the music practice rooms, or else they wouldn’t function as they should.

The aim of the music school was to create a safe environment for students, teachers and guests to be able to learn in and enjoy the experience of being there, whether it be though the spaces available, or a particular performance in the auditorium. By creating a perforated front elevation, this meant that light could be crafted in to the building, making it a brighter and airy space, instantly making it feel more comfortable. During this term, the notion of typologies was also explored. This was an interesting way to be able to use precedents as a way of research, and getting inspiration for the music school design.
